Connect Your Virgin/Sky Box To Your Hard Drive DVD Recorder

As there’s been one or two you lovely people arriving on this site hoping for a guide to connecting up you sky or virgin box to you DVD/HDD Recorder, I thought I would save you the trouble of carrying on your search. I’ve put a mini-guide on here for you. It is relatively straight-forward, once you get your SCARTs right you should be in business.

backofdvd

Now not all DVD Recorders or Hard Drive recorders will look like this at the back but they will have similar connections, basically all we’re interested in are the two SCART sockets and possibly the aerial and rf out sockets if you want to receive analogue as well.

The top SCART socket is the ‘EURO AV2′ SCART normally labelled ‘Decoder’ (and sometimes light blue in colour on some DVD HDD Recorders) this one connects to your Sky or Virgin Box (DVD/VCR SCART socket on the Sky box, probably similar on the Virgin box), the ‘EURO AV1′ SCART usually labelled ‘TV’ or ‘Audio Video’ goes into your TV. Then set your TV input option to the SCART socket you’ve just connected up on your TV (SCART1, SCART2, etc). This is how I’ve set mine up with a Sky+ box and it works fine, so hopefully if you follow this,  it should work ok. If you have Sky HD you won’t get the HD quality when recording to your DVD/HDD Recorder as you’re connecting through SCARTs but this should allow you to record 3 programs at the same time if you really want to. You can also copy any Sky+ or Virgin+ recordings to either DVD or Hard Drive if you wish to do so.

For analog, plug your outside aerial cable into the aerial socket of your player and then you will another coax running from your RF-Out socket to the aerial socket of your TV. Then you’ll need to tune your DVD/HDD Recorder to receive analog channels.

Hope this helps!

  1. Great site. Thanks for the information.

  2. I wanted to say that it’s nice to know that someone else also mentioned this as I had trouble finding the same info elsewhere. This was the first place that told me the answer. Thanks.

It certainly works with my Sky+HD box, I just changed the input option on the TV to “Scart 1″ (well it automatically selects it when the DVD Recorder is switched on) and I could use the sky remote no problem. The principle should be the same with a V+ box surely. I know it’s a bit trial and error but try different ports if there are any and the different input options on your TV if you haven’t already.

Glad to hear you solved the problem! I was going to say that without a SCART connection is was going to be impossible unless your DVD player had HDMI connectivity.

  11. toshiba TV 2 scarts-av1,av2
    V+ box 2scarts-TV,VCR
    Digital HDD 2scarts-TV,VCR
    How should these be connected?

  12. Darren /

Pure guess but I would say
1.Virgin Box – TV SCART to TV AV1
2.Digital HDD – TV SCART to TV AV2
3.Digital HDD – VCR SCART to Virgin Box VCR SCART

you might even be able to do it without #2 otherwise you would have to switch between AV1 and AV2 if you want to record/

  13. Darren /

I’ll try but you’ll have to send me a description ie how many SCARTS etc thanks

  14. Darren /

I don’t think it will work then, as a guess perhaps try DVD connecting to the TV with the Virgin Box connecting to your DVD

i am connecting a dvd player to a sky box and TV and your explanation and diagram is very useful. Interesting comment you made re RF lead and analogue.

Do I need the RF in and out lead to watch Freeview on my TV, or will just the scart leads be sufficient?

    thanks for posting

If you’re watching freeview channels via your Sky box then you shouldn’t need the RF as you’ll be running through the dish so the SCART connections should suffice. Hope that helps.
