Panasonic DMR-EZ48VEBK – DVD Recorder & VCR Combi

Most people have found the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VEBK to be excellent for transfering old video tapes to DVD which with the DMR-EZ48VEBK is extrememly straighforward. While the DMR-EZ48VEBK isn’t the most technologically advanced, it is the ease of use that most people find attractive. The VCR playback is generally of a higher quality that most ordinary VCRs. As well as all this though, it does have one or two nifty functions:

1080p Up – Conversion
Eh? what’s that then I hear you cry well this basically means taking a standard definition (SD) signal and transfering it into a higher definition (HD) signal. This means that if you have a HDTV then using a HDMi connection you can improve on your regular SCART connection and make it almost actual HD (but not true HD like Blu-Ray) 1080p Up-Conversion means that the machine will take the ordinary signal (480lines on a DVD) and fill it upto 1080p (pixels).

I/P Conversion
In the old days TVs were made up of lines (hence the 480 lines on a DVD) but in the age of LCD and Plasma screens, lines have been replaced by pixels (PC monitors work in the same way). Therefore when upconversion takes place, the machine fills in the rest of the picture for you. These extra pixels don’t actually exist on the DVD, this is where I/P Conversion comes in, the machine has to ‘guess’ what they are by using a number of existing pixels in order to create what it thinks a new one should be which is why the picture quality won’t be quite as good as a true HD disc such as Blu-Ray.

What’s a Pixel? A pixel is a very very small dot on your screen that forms part of an image. 1000s of these pixels form a picture, rather like a mosaic, or if you want to be high browed, pointelism in art. The more pixels the better quality picture you have.

Super Multi Format
This basically means that it will play absolutley and type of DVD out there, be it DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RAM etc. It means that you won’t have to stand there in PC World scratching your head wondering which one will work on the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VEBK….they all will!
