Samsung BD-D6900M – Blu-ray disc player with TV tuner

Samsung’s latest blu-ray player, the BD-D6900M looks great on the eye but can it deliver underneath that polished exterior? The stylish touch screen LED buttons and slot loading disk tray add to the sleek looks and shiny finish. Not only that but there’s DLNA, internet TV and a Freeview HD TV Tuner all included. One of the things that does let the BD-D6900M down slightly is the connectivity. A single USB port hidden on the front, round the back there’s the usual HDMI and component video outputs, an optical S/PDIF audio output and a network port.

The BD-D6900M works pretty well as a Freeview tuner, the menus is easy to follow and you have picture in picture so you can watch and search at the same time. You can play movies from a memory stick or external USB storage device should you wish to, the only problem with that is that the storage device must be formatted to the same file system as the BD-D6900M meaning that you won’t be able to play them on a PC.

You have got Smart HUB Internet TV system which includes BBC iPlayer, LoveFilm and AceTrax not tot mention access to Facebook and Twitter. So keeping up to date with your favorite programs or catching up with your friends on social networking sites shouldn’t be a problem. As with most new Blu-Ray players, it does support 3D playback and will upscale 2D movies to 3D.

What is a good feature is it’s various of playback formats. MP4, MKV, Xvid and DivX are available on the BD-D6900M allowing for more storage capacity of your favorite movies or TV programs should you wish to convert them from DVD or Blu-Ray. At above £200 is it slightly more pricey that say the Phillips BDP7600 but it does come with Freeview HD Tuner as an added bonus so it’s a great choice if that’s what you’re looking for as well as a blu-ray player.
