The Pocket BLU interface on the iPhone

The iPhone and iPod touch can now interact with your Bluray player thanks to a new app from Universal Studios. The Pocket BLU app which is completely free by the way will debut on November 17th. It will turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into an advanced remote control. This will allow you to navigate menus, playback your movies and use the BD-Live functions should your bluray player have them included.

Of course movie discs will need to be pocket BLU enabled as will your Bluray player. You will be able to view previews, and browse through exclusive bonus content that that can be saved to your iPhone/iPod Touch or have it streamed to your device via WiFi. The app will even allow you to chat to your friends via IM or Email via a pop-up keyboard.

This adds to the enticement of getting a networked Bluray Player, with the likes of DLNA and BD-Live it seems that manufacturers and movies studios are embracing this new technology in the hope that we the consumer will embrace it too and get us back the TV rather than the PC. An iPhone or iPod touch user will no doubt find this an extra enticement to get hold of a networked bluray player, just to have something else to play with!

(November 24), Public Enemies (December 8),Inglourious Basterds (December 15), American Pie Presents: The Book of Love (December 22) and 9 (December 29) pocket BLU is an expandable platform that will allow Universal Studios Home Entertainment to introduce even more new and groundbreaking mobile features on additional devices and platforms in the very near future.
